How Airport DOOH Measurement Works Today

Airport DOOH measurement specifically uses a combination of methods that the major media owners present as audience data but that remain fundamentally estimation-based.

Footfall counting uses people counters at entry points, gate areas, and concourse sections to estimate how many people passed a given display location in a given period. This produces an opportunity-to-see figure — the number of people who could have seen the display — not an actual impression count.

Mobile location data cross-references anonymised mobile device signals with display locations to estimate dwell time and audience composition. This data is probabilistic — inferred from device proximity — and relies on the accuracy and coverage of the underlying location data provider.

Brand recall surveys are conducted with airport passengers to measure advertising recall. These produce awareness and recall metrics that are genuinely useful for brand advertising objectives but say nothing about conversion.

Demographic profiling uses facial detection technology to estimate age and gender ranges for audiences in front of specific displays. This produces audience composition estimates, not individual-level data.

None of these methods answer the advertiser’s most important question: did my ad reach the right person, and did that person buy?

Traditional DOOH measurement ignores this data entirely. The screen in Gate B14 shows the same ad to the Dubai-bound business class passengers that it showed to the London-bound economy passengers two hours earlier, and the measurement system counts both groups as equivalent impressions.

Contextual advertising uses this data. The ad triggered by the SV 412 boarding event reaches only the Dubai-bound passengers, and the impression is attributed to that specific flight event, not to a statistical estimate of who passed the screen.

The mechanism is straightforward. A contextual ad triggered by a flight event carries a QR code that is unique to that impression instance — encoding the campaign, the zone, the flight, and the timestamp. When a passenger scans the QR code, the scan event is logged and attributed to that specific impression. If the passenger completes a purchase on the landing page the QR resolves to, that conversion is attributed to the same impression.

What Closed-Loop Measurement Changes for Airport Advertising

When airport advertising can prove outcomes rather than estimate impressions, the commercial dynamics change in several ways.

CPM justification improves. Advertisers who can see that contextual airport ad impressions convert at a measurably higher rate than alternatives can justify higher CPMs for that inventory. The premium is earned, not asserted.

The range of advertisers expands. Performance marketers — e-commerce brands, direct response advertisers, subscription services — have historically avoided airport OOH because they cannot justify the spend without conversion data. Closed-loop measurement opens airport inventory to this category of advertiser.

Campaign optimisation becomes possible. With outcome data, advertisers can test creative, targeting parameters, and timing. The airport advertising program becomes iterative rather than static.
